UFC 148 - Chael "Sunshine" Sonnen!

UPDATE: Ed Soares Comments and Interviews on Chael Sonnen's Trash Talking!

http://www.sherdog.com/news/news/Ed-Soares-Chael-Sonnens-a-Good-Guy-But-He-Crossed-the-Line-44085

Let me start by saying I have a great deal of respect for Mixed Martial Arts and all fighting styles.  I also have a great deal of respect for the men and women athletes who compete in specific disciplines and in mixed disciplines.  I don't have any respect for condescending loudmouths who put other competitors down to hype themselves up.  Don't get me wrong, I have opinions and I'm passionate about specific athletes. I'm outspoken about how I feel, my opinion and the such.

This brings me to UFC 148.  UFC 148 is all about Chael Sonnen and Anderson Silva.  Plain and simple.  Not to downplay the other fights and fighters, but Sonnen and Silva are bringing the audience. It's no secret the that this is a grudge match.  It's personal and it's obvious.  What I'm not going to do is breakdown the fight.  I simply want to comment on Chael Sonnen and his media presence leading up to this huge fight card.

To be frank, Chael Sonnen's comments and pre-fight interviews just piss me off.  Sonnen is pretty clear about his feelings on Brazilians and Anderson Silva.  It's one thing to dislike Silva, his style, his record or his training camp.  It's another thing voice your personal dislike of a country, an ethnicity and culture.  His comment about his childhood and talking about new technology, medicine and American ingenuity while Anderson Silva and the Brazilians were playing in the mud sounds more racially charged than MMA related.

So in Sonnen's eyes, he was the rich, privileged white kid and Silva was a poor, underprivileged Brazilian kid. As adults, both compete in the UFC.  Silva is the UFC Middleweight champion with 14 consecutive wins and 9 title defenses. Sonnen, we'll he's not.  So let's asses net worth as it pertains to their fighting careers.  After all, they are both athletes in the same sport, in the same organization and fighting for the same belt.  Chael Sonnen, 27 wins, 8 losses, and 1 draw.  Of Sonnen's 11 losses 8 of them via submission.  Triangle chokes, armbars, you know that Brazilian JiuJitsu stuff.  No belts, not titles.

http://www.sherdog.com/fighter/Chael-Sonnen-4112

Anderson Silva, 31 wins and 4 losses.  Two of Silva's losses came via submission.  Silva is the longest standing belt holder in UFC history.  He has the most title defenses in UFC history.  Depending on who you ask, he is rated the pound-for-pound best fighter in the world.  He's already submitted Sonnen once and he is the current belt holder.

http://www.sherdog.com/fighter/Anderson-Silva-1356

Fact of the matter is that when put to the same test, in the same arena, with the same resources, Anderson Silva is the best in the world and Chael Sonnen is second. I'm going to go out on a limb here and say that childhood discussions about technology, medicine and American ingenuity don't help you in the world of Mixed Martial Arts.  In fact, based on the data you're better off playing in the mud.  If you want to be a world champion middleweight mixed martial arts fighter anyway.

http://www.fightmatrix.com/mma-ranks/middleweight/

In conclusion, trash talking your opponents upbringing won't help you fight better.  In fact, from what I've read you're better off growing up "Brazilian" in the fight world.  I see Sonnen's position, as he expresses it in open discussion, to be ignorant.

My opinion is that Sonnen should have a greater respect for Brazil and especially Brazilian JiuJitsu.  Over 70% of Sonnen's MMA carrer losses came by submission  It's a Brazilian that has the very thing he desires most.  It's Anderson Silva who has what Chael Sonnen "would trade everything he's got" for.  Respect the game.  Respect Brazil.  Respect Brazilian JiuJitsu.  Especially when the Brazilian kids playing in the mud are the founders of the very style that has kept you from wearing the belt.  Gracie JiuJitsu helped pave the way for UFC and without BJJ UFC very well may not exist.  It was Royce Gracie's overall tournament win in UFC 1 that set the wheels in motion for MMA as we know it.

Even if Sonnen were to defeat Anderson Silva, he earns only the belt.  I don't see Chael Sonnen with 14 consecutive wins and 9 title defenses.  Don't get me wrong, Sonnen is an accomplished mixed martial artist ranked number two in the world.  In personality, I think he ranks a touch lower than that.  That's just my opinion.

What? The 11 Greatest MMA Ring Girls of All Time!!!

The title says it all!  No need for my two cents.

Check it out at http://www.cagepotato.com/the-11-greatest-mma-ring-girl-videos-of-all-time/ to get your ring girl read on!

The Names Anderson Silva and GSP Come to Mind!!!

It has been quite a while since I last posted. I apologize for the leave of absence.  I'll be honest, life has been busy, challenging, eventful, and exhausting, but no excuses allowed. I'm back and what comes to mind tonight are two names.  Anderson Silva and Georges St. Pierre.

I guess maybe I wasn't interested in writing about the hype surrounding Nate Marquardt, his weight cut to 170 lbs. and his upcoming fight against Rick Story.  I simply don't find it that interesting.  If he proves himself at 170, then he'll gain my attention.  For now, I'll let Sherdog cover it.

For my first return post, I'll keep it short and sweet.  Anderson Silva, still the top dog, still cocky as hell, still unbeatable!  Think of him what you will, but the man has his game strung tight.  He's the king of the mountain and until someone knocks his ass out of his seat, he'll remain the main.

Georges St. Pierre is one outstanding athlete and an all around good guy.  If the famed Jake Shields couldn't bring him down, honestly who has the ability to do so.  All the hype, all the build up for a good fight, but a loss for Shields.  I mean, this fight was so hyped, so pumped up that you would have thought Shields had already walked away with the belt.  Sorry, not this time.  Here's a Maple leaf, replace your winning streak with this!  No offense to Jake, he's a damn good fighter and other than GSP, obviously unbeatable.

However you slice the pie, Anderson Silva and Georges St. Pierre still reign supreme in the world of MMA.  Fans can't talk about fights without these two names entering the conversation.  So, I thought I'd stir the pot and bring it up myself.  Plus, it was a good first article back on the scene.

The Discipline Behind Martial Arts and MMA

Hello World,

It's been a while since my last post.  I apologize to my followers for not being able to update the blog.  To be frank, I've been distracted with a family emergency that has required my complete attention.  Although this is still a major part of my life and my daily ongoings, I thought I'd post a little something that is an important part of life and applies very much to sport fighting.

Discipline!  Discipline is a word that many people throw around loosely.  Although it's rather subjective, discipline comes in many forms.  The discipline to adhere to your workout routine.  The discipline of your fighting style.  The discipline of your overall life style.  Even the discipline to exercise good self control, judgment and relay this in life.

When we talk about Mixed Martial Arts, some people cringe.  They think of grown men stepping inside a cage and just beating each other to a near-death state.  Fact of the matter is, that's not what MMA is about.  It's a common misconception.

MMA and sport fighting has evolved.  Fighters are more disciplined than years past.  Back in the day, the UFC didn't use gloves and all the viewer wanted was blood and beatings. Today's fighter is much more well-rounded than that.  To think that you stand a chance in the fight world without true discipline is foolish.  To think that sport fighting and MMA is undisciplined and unorganized is equally as foolish.

Today's fighters train hard, and fight harder.  They are disciplined in their lifestyle to push their bodies to the limit and still function as normal human beings and operate within the constructs of today's society.  To be a fighter doesn't mean you're an animal.  On the contrary, it means the exact opposite.

Don't get me wrong.  Some fighters are pure animal with no regard for their opponent.  Their ideology is to inflict the greatest amount of physical harm possible.  We'll that's part of it, but a small part.  To step into the ring and demolish your opponent in some fashion may it be via KO or submission is the objective.  But it's discipline that keeps that type of mindset in the cage doesn't allow it to spill over into every day life.  You can't just go around pounding on people just because you can.  That takes discipline and self control.

It's more important and more productive to be disciplined enough to know your body, your opponent, your limits, strengths and weaknesses.  Engage on a level that is more intelligent than animalistic.

If you're ignorant enough to come at Urijah Faber with nothing more than a couple of street fights under your belt, you'll find a rude awakening at the other end of a 4oz glove.  Be disciplined enough to know that you might be the toughest guy at the barbecue, but you're not UFC heavyweight material.

Discipline and self control go hand-in-hand.  Just think, if every martial artist or MMA practitioner went around throwing down with everyone that pissed them off, the world would be a bloody place.  It takes a disciplined fighter to know and understand that social constructs, morality and ethics keep us from wreaking havoc on society.  Just because someone called you an asshole or flipped you the bird doesn't mean you can slap the shit out of them.

If you are in fact a real fighter, you know that.  You're disciplined enough to understand that you have to exercise self control and walk away, drive away or turn the other cheek.  Sometimes walking away is winning the fight.  Fighting an assault charge because you couldn't keep your cool is a fight not worth fighting.

So for all of your practitioners out there and even you non-practitioners out there, take it from a former hot-head, keep your cool and keep the fight in the cage or the dojo.

Exercise good judgment and be disciplined enough to know that fighting isn't about kicking the shit out of anyone you can.   Be a fighter not a chump or a felon.

Boxing vs. MMA

The age old debate, boxing versus mixed martial arts.  It's simple and cut and dry.  They are simply two different sports.  There isn't much more to it that that.  The one thing they do share in common is inflicting physical damage and pain on your opponent via strikes.  Other than that, it's like comparing basketball to football.  Sure, they both use a ball, but they don't match up.

The perfect example was James Toney vs. Randy Couture in UFC 118.  Toney was hot to get into MMA and show the world that he didn't need a well rounded game, all he needed was boxing.  We all know how that ended.  Someone got choked out.  But we all saw that coming.  You can't expect to cross over into a dynamic sport composed of so many different elements from another sport that is completely different.  Is boxing comples, yes.  Is MMA complex, yes.  Can you compare the two, no.

I could go on all day about just how very different each sport is but here is a short list.  First, the gloves are different sizes, weights and thickness.  A strike to the head from a 4 ounce MMA glove is much different than a boxing glove.  Two, boxing is a stand-up war.  MMA is dynamic.  If you are getting beat on your feet, you shoot for the take down, work the Jiu Jitsu, wrestle.  There are different outs.  In boxing, you're going to have to stand there and bang, you have no other option.  You can lay and pary on your opponent hoping to tie him up enough to regain whatever you need, time or energy.  But, that only works for so long.

Now if Randy Couture stepped in the Boxing ring, the dynamic changes.  There are a whole hell of a lot more rounds and Randy can't drop to the floor for the take down.  He's forced to bang and exchange.  I'm not so sure that's where Randy wants to be.  There are however many strikers in MMA who might just handle their own if not make a name in boxing should they try.  I'm willing to be the same can be said for boxers in MMA.

I can say this, it's not James Toney.  Over weight, out of shape, and no concept of Jiu Jitsu makes for a bad MMA practitioner.  It probably makes for a bad boxer too.  At the end of the day, it's apples to oranges.  You really can't compare the two.  My preference is MMA for many reasons, but that's another article all by itself.

UFC 117 Fighter Salaries

Wondering what UFC fighters make per fight. Well, here are some of the salary distributions for UFC 117. One thing that I'm going to point out is Anderson Silva and Matt Hughes! Can someone please tell me what is up with this picture? Anderson Silva has defended his belt 8 times with 8 wins. He takes home no win bonus. Why I'm not sure, maybe Dana White didn't find him getting his face smashed for 22+ minutes before being smart enough to trangle Chael Sonnen entertaining enough to award him a couple of extra bucks for pulling off a clutch victory.

Matt Hughes wins. Yay, whooo hoo.. Ok so Matt wins, were used to this. He win's, he loses, he wins, he disappears, he comes back. Whatever, he's a fighter who's been around. But it wasn't a title fight. It was a quick and exciting fight, but not a title fight.

I'm not trying to take anything away from Hughes, but the Silva fight was a title shot. A five round war that ended in a the most unexpected tap with just a few minutes left to go. The Hughes fight was a three round fight. Both earn the same pay out? Something is wront here! Am I wrong?

Medical Suspensions for Fighters

How many of you MMA fans out there knew that the UFC issued Medical suspensions? What is a medical suspension you ask, we'll it's when a fighter is suspended from fighting for a period of time determined by the amount of damaged sustained during a fight.

Here is a link to BJ Penn's site with the list of medical suspensions from UFC 117. This should put things into perspective for you. Especially for those of you who were wondering why you sometimes don't see fighters fight for long periods between fights. Take a look at Anderson Silva's suspensions, 180 days, that's six months. No rematch, no title fights for at least 18 months. Check it out for yourself.

Vale Tudo "Anything Goes" Bare Knuckle Fighting

There are so many people out there who think that the UFC and WEC define what is "sport fighting". What they don't understand is that UFC and WEC are simply brands. Refined, more organized, and arguably safer forms of raw fighting.

Here is some bare kunckle Vale Tudo. Watch for the shoulder locks, head buts, and some of the other things you won't see in UFC or WEC. Also, these boys aren't wearing gloves to protect their hands. Anything goes!!!

Chael Sonnen Taps via Triangle Choke in Round 5 of UFC 117

Chael Sonnen shocked a lot of people with his performance. He dominated Anderson Silva for almost 5 rounds. However, in MMA, it all comes down to the win. Chael got over confident and found himself trapped in a triangle choke he couldn't ground and pound his way out of. So he tapped out losing the fight.

Silva did not perform as many of us expected, but he won as I had expected he would. He had me on the edge of my seat saying to myself "what the hell are you doing". I almost thought he was gonna lose this fight.

However, just like any good fighter, you never surrender. You push through until you have no more. You look for your opportunity and you take it. Although he didn't fight as well as he should have, he found his moment and tapped Chael out.

That's the BJJ game. You could be tied up the entire fight and just when everyone things your down and out, you slap on that choke to win the fight.

I think this fight will humble Silva a little more, but it does show the world what a warrior he is. He was dominated for over 23 minutes before he choked out Chael.

You could say a lot of things, but can you roll for 23 minutes full tilt with someon pounding on your face and body? Better yet, could you take a beating for 23 minutes without surrendering? Could you take a beating for 23 minutes and win the fight with a strategic choke. I bet many of us out there couldn't. We'll most of us couldn't.

I personally know somewhat what this feels like. No more than a week ago I was working on some grappling with a good friend. We rolled around for about 30 minutes. Although it wasn't as intense as this fight, I know how winded and tired I was. Now if my buddy was pounding on my head, I'm not sure I could have lasted more than 10 minutes. Although outsized, I know what it's like to be pushed around for a long period of time. I have a great deal of respect for anyone who can hang in there for five 5 minute rounds and pull off a choke out win.

Say what you want, but The Spider is still the champ!!!

Chael Sonnen Tap Dancing - Oh Wait, Just Tapping Out!!!

Here is a video that I found on Youtube. The video does have some explicit content and offensive remarks (captions). In order to view the video you will have to have a Youtube or Gmail account to login.

http://www.youtube.com/verify_age?next_url=http%3A//www.youtube.com/watch%3Fv%3Dc0DLJOMMdjA

In this video you will see Chael "subscribe" to several arbars, and triangle chokes. He did a lot of talking about how his wrestling is going to help him get Silva to the ground. This video shows some of his wrestling skills. He wrestles into a bunch of nice chokes.

UFC 117, although it's just such a huge marketing machine, is going to be a legendary fight no doubt. Either a Sonnen fan or a Silva fan, you have to admit that this is going to go down in the books as one of the best fights ever. If not for the fight itself, but all the smack talking and build-up.

I can't wait to see the outcome, although biased, I think I know who's gonna come out on top!!!

UFC 117 Primer on Sherdog.com

Here is a good primer for UFC 117 which talks about Dana white and his marking evolution. It talks a bit about someone actually testing Anderson Silva and Dana white just may believe that Sonnen can do it. I think he's out of his mind, but that's me.

http://www.sherdog.com/news/articles/Primer-UFC-117-26119

Has Chael Sonnen perfected his ground game? We'll he had better or Silva is gonna slap a choke on him faster than mommy can lay a diaper on a newborn.

Anderson Sliva....That's all I have to Say!!!

Chael Sonnen is clownin. Maybe he hasn't seen this video or maybe he is mistaking the Spider for someone else. This right here makes every point needed.

Jason Riley - A Local Fighter out of Columbus Ohio Gets his Break on Showtime StrikeForce!

Jason Riley, a home town boy from Columbus, Ohio got his break. He'll be fighting for StrikeForce on August 21st. I got the word from my cousin in Ohio who is a big supporter of his local fighters. He asked me to get the word out. This kid deserves the support, so let's give it to him. Anyone who trains or fights knows how hard it is to make it. What it takes to make the big time and this local boy did it. Let's all give it up and show our support.

My cousin tells me he's a real stand-up guy. He's passed through his local area and always taken care of the local kids with autographs and even lets them walk him to the cage.

Here's what I think! Anyone who has worked this hard training and fighting his way to the top from the bottom deserves our support. Anyone who takes time to pay attention to the kids who support the support and goes as far as signing autographs and even lets them walk him to the cage is a good person. Although I don't know him personally, I think that's a real fighter. A respectful fighter who cares about his fans and the future of the sport.

Support him and give him his props. He deserves it. If he's taken time out of his life to show my family some love, he's got my support. Help him out, give him your support.

Chael Sonnen - Fifteeen Minutes of Fame!!!

Chael Sonnen pretty much admits that he doens't have the stand up skill that Anderson Silva has. He also admists that he has to drop Silva on his back to win this fight. When asked directly what he would do if Anderson Silva starts dancing or "clowning" around in the ring, what he would do and he says he has no plan. He's not sure. We'll you'd better anticipate every angle if you're gonna fight a guy who uses unorthodox setups to knock your ass out. He's not clowning around, he's making you believe that he's dropping his guard so you rush in and then next thing you know you're asleep.

Don't thing for a minute that this is a joke or a game for him. He's smart enough to know what he's doing and it's worked flawlessly several times. It's part of his style, not just play time.

One thing that I have to say is, he's in for a rude awakening. He might have what he thinks is a winning attitude, but he's got a piss poor attitude when it comes to respect and respecting other fighters in the game that have earned their ranks. Silva "clowns" becauase he can. Not because he's entertainining. If you ran through your oponents like he has done, you'd have to add some flare to your fights too.

Don't get me wrong, Chael appears to be an intelligent person, but that does not stop the Spider. Strategy and intelligence play a huge roll in a fight, but in his case it's more errogance and disresepect that he's displaying than true intelligence and understanding.

What he is engaging in is a war, best case. Worst case, he's been talking shit for quite a while and he gets shut up real quick and looks like a fool. No matter how you look at it, he'll be the one on the floor tapping or napping at the end. He's getting his fifteen minutes of fame bashing the Nog brothers, Silva, and the country of Brazil.

Personally I'd like to see Chael get put in a position where he has to stand with Silva where Silva is really comfortable. He're he'll lose the fight for sure. However, Silva can choke your ass out wit the quickness. Chael seems to thing that he can drop him to his back with his wrestling, but I don't see it. Silva will defend the take down expecting that Chael will want to go to the ground.

I dobut he'll get him on his back and if he does, I don't think he he's going to be able to handle Silva's ground game the way he thinks he can. I think Chael is simply shit talking and he's gonna come into this fight over-confident and make a real quick mistake. He'll either get knocked out or submitted on his own mistake.

Anone who has studied martial arts and has engaged in any sort of martial arts training, knows to put up and shut up. Before a Jiu Jitsu match you don't shit talk and then fight, you fight and if you destroy your opponent then you earn your bragging rights. It's bad for the sport, just shut your face and fight. Talk some smack if you want, but you don't have to go on and on and on. You look like a fool. Now go and lose and see what you look like after you've talked your talk and weeble wobbled your way through the walking.

I say Chael Sonnen under estimates Anderson Silva, lasts the first round, but gets knocked out or triangled in the second.

Can Edgar Do It Again, or Was BJ Penn off His Game?

I'm a huge BJ Penn fan and it broke my heart to see him lose. I gotta wonder what the outcome of the rematch will be. I see Penn coming back and reclaiming what is his?

Who Puts on the Best Show, The Big Boys or the 145'ers?

Personally, for me it's the little guys that fight like a Pit Bull with no option but to come out on top. Not to take credit from the heavyweights, but a one shot knockout just doesn't cut it for me. Go five minutes straight looking for 50 different submissions while still exchanging and clenching up, now that's a fight. Hugging and kissing while you rub heads gathering up enough energy to throw another over the top hook, leaves me with something to be desired.

One punch knock out power is great if you want to see a quick fight and clap for your favorite big dog, but watch the little guys take head shots time and time again and come back for more, makes me wanna put it down.

UFC - Just a Major Marketing Power or Good for Sport Fighting

Here's the question. Ask any joe on the street these days and everyone knows what or who UFC is, but do they really know what sport fighting is and what makes a real fighter? UFC, a Microsoft style marketing engine or good for the sport of fighting? Don't get me wrong, Tapout an UFC brought sport fighting to the masses, but is UFC just a money maker, or is UFC actually educating people on the are of fighting for sport or passion if that's your bag?

Wearing a shirt or a hat with a brand logo doesn't make you an expert on the sport. Hell, I see people wearing Yankees caps all the time and half of 'em don't know squat about the sport of baseball.

Hands Down, Who's Got the Best Chin in MMA???

In your honest opinion, who has the absolute best chin in MMA? Were talking about someone who can take solid shots, possibly right on the button and keep on fighting.

Personally, off the top of my head, I have to say Chris Leben. I've seen Chris take a shot, watch his eyes roll and then watch him push forward to knock out his opponent with strikes of his own not long after. I don't recall the exact fight, but I'll dig it up and post a link to the video if I can find it.

Shinya Aoki vs Tatsuya Kawajiri - A video from DREAM 15 July 10th, 2010

Your Personal Top Twenty Fighters!

This is a little wider scope of choices. Let's face it, to decide on your top five fighters is tough. More than one fighter who deserves to be in the top five is bound to be left out.

However, there is a lot more wiggle room when deciding your top twenty fighters. Hell you might even want to add Kimbo Slice for all I know. There's a hell of a lot of fighters out there. Let's just say Chris "The Crippler" Leben had better make your list. Another sleeper, and I say sleeper because he's not a UFC, Pride, or StrikeForce marketing engine, is Eddie Bravo. Who are Your Favorite Five Mixed Martial Arts Fighters?

Who are your top five favorite fighters? I'm not asking for who is the best pound-for-pound rankings. I want your personal opinion on who your five favorite fighters are, wins and losses aside.

Mine are in no specific order:

The Ice Man
BJ Penn
Georges St-Pierre
Anderson Silva
Wanderlei Silva

Who are yours?

Carwin vs. Lesnar!!!

I'm really interested in what all you MMA junkies have to say about this fight. Is it what you expected? Did Shane Carwin just gas out? Whose truly the better fighter, not just who won the fight, simply whose better.

Here is my opinion. Shane Cawin would have destroyed Brock. He lit him up and dropped him like a hot potatoe. His one mistake was gassing out. He had Brock running and landed him on his back. While Brock lay rocked in the fetal position, instead of forcing him to his feat, or working for a submission, he put all his energy into continuing the barage of strikes. It takes a lot of energy to keep hitting a brick wall. When it's doing no damange, dont waste the energy. Force your oponent to their feet where they have no choice but to bang with you.

Carwin made the mistake of gassing out. That's what lost him the fight. He's a better fighter and would have beat Brock, but he didn't bottom line. A win is a win. My opinion is Carwin is a better fighter, he might not have been smarter at UFC 116, but he's the better fighter.

Chael Sonnen vs. Anderson Silva - Chime In!

In my honest opinion, this is a no-brainer. Silva posseses superior standup, is a more seasoned fighter and has already defeated fighters that Sonnen has lost to. Silva is simply to long and tall for Sonnen. Sonnen has heart and talks, but can he back it up.

I don't think he can. We all know that anybody can win at any time. All it takes is one little mistake, but Silva hasn't made that mistake yet. He's fought better fighters than Sonnen and done it with ease. He's even gotten bored and started show-boating to entertain himself. Which, I have to admit, does aggravate me a little.

I'm sorry to say, Sonnen doesn't get my vote. I expect that Sonnen will charge in, which will be a big mistake. Silva is going to look for his traditional laid back keep you back stance and Muy Thai style. He's gonna work his legs and fell out Sonnen. If Sonnen charges like a bull, he's gonna hit a brick wall of knees and dirty boxing.

What are your thoughts? Break it down...
